Posted by on Apr 12, 2012 in Diet It UP, Health It UP

Have you ever noticed that the majority of foods list “0 g of trans fat” on their nutrition labels? The majority of these foods do actually have trans fat, manufacturers simply aren’t required to list it.

22 minutes! Researchers in Australia recently conducted a study on 11,000 adults to get to the bottom of just how horrible TV-watching really is for your health. Well…I didn’t really see this coming, but the results were pretty shocking. The researchers found that Australian’s 25+ collectively watched ~9.8 BILLION hours of TV since 2008, which equated to a loss of 286,000 hours of life-or about 22 minutes/hour of TV watched. Wow…That’s pretty incredible. Thinking about it, you’d have to watch ~23,890 hours to cut 1 year off of your life, or ~65.5 hours to cut 1 day off of your life. Well then, thinking to myself…I’ve already lost a few months of my life. Although I do question the validity of the study and their assumption that the loss of years of life is directly caused by TV watching (also,...

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is nasty…cut it out. Although the rise in obesity can’t solely be attributed to increased high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) consumption, there’s no doubt that HFCS has been one of the major factors. You can find the full story explaining how insulin, carbs, and HFCS impact weight loss here, but I’ll quickly recap why HFCS is so bad for the body. The HFCS Story: There are many different types of sugar, a few include: lactose, which is found in dairy products; fructose, which is found in fruits; and glucose, which is a product of carbohydrate breakdown. These sugars are not chemically identical and have much different effects on the body’s blood sugar levels. Most fruits have a relatively low glycemic index value (low glycemic index foods raise blood sugar levels at a slower rate). Even though they’re high in sugar,...

To simplify the calorie calculation process (to gain, lose, or maintain weight), we’ve developed a simple calorie calculator to find your personalized level to gain, lose, or maintain weight. It requires that you to input your body fat %, weight, and TDEE multiplier (total daily energy expenditure) and voila, it’ll spit out your very own personal daily caloric requirements for any situation. Additionally, although BMI is a horrible metric to gauge whether or not someone should be classified as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese, we’ve built in a simplified BMI calculator that requires you to only input your height and weight. BMI is a widely used and recognized metric to determine the overweight & obese percentage of the population. You can download it here: The Lean It UP Calorie Calculator and BMI Calculator Tweet Follow Lean It UP on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest for real-time fitness/nutrition tips, advice,...

Cough Drops Could Be Making You Fat

Posted by on Apr 10, 2012 in Diet It UP, Health It UP

Walk into any CVS and you’ll see a colorful collection of cough drops. I doubt many people even think about reading the ingredients or nutrition facts on cough drops…typically you wouldn’t think of them as “food,” but rather as medicine. It’s amazing how much sugar, artificial ingredients, and other unhealthy ingredients they can pack into a small, seemingly healthy cough drop…
