What Is It?

At its core, anyone on a vegetarian diet eats fruit, veggies, beans, grains, seeds, nuts, and oils as primary staples, and excludes all meat and fish. Vegetarianism breaks down further into 4 general classes:

  • Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian — traditional and most common; excludes meat, poultry, and fish.
  • Lacto-Vegetarian — excludes all meat, poultry, fish, AND eggs.
  • Ovo-Vegetarian — excludes all meat, poultry, fish, AND dairy; allows eggs.
  • Vegan — excludes ALL animal products, including: meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy. Also excludes any foods derived from animal products like lard (refried beans), whey (protein powder), or gelatin (Jell-O).

What Isn’t Vegetarian:
  • LO-V — meat, poultry, fish
  • L-V — meat, poultry, fish, eggs
  • O-V — meat, poultry, fish, dairy
  • Vegan — meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs; ALL animal products
