[News] Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, MaraNatha Almond Butter Recalled Over Salmonella Contamination
If you’ve been downing almond butter, check your stash.
According to the FDA, nSpired Natural Foods, Inc. (private label manufacturer) is issuing a voluntary recall of various lines of almond butter and peanut butter due to potential Salmonella contamination. A total of 45 production batches are impacted— including MaraNatha, Arrowhead Mills, and private label brands from Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, and Safeway—with “best by” dates ranging from December 2014 to July 2015.
Lines include:
- Whole Foods 365 Creamy/Crunchy Roasted Almond Butter, (Dec. 2014)
- Trader Joe’s Creamy/Crunchy Raw Almond Butter (Dec. 2014 – Jul. 2015)
- Safeway Open Nature Almond Butter (Dec. 2014 – Jul. 2015)
- Kroger No Stir Creamy Almond Butter (Dec. 2014 – Jul. 2015)
- Arrowhead Mills Organic Creamy/Crunchy Peanut Butter (Dec. 2014 – May 2015)
- MaraNatha Peanut Butters & Almond Butters (Dec. 2014 – Jul. 215)
MaraNatha was the most widely impacted, with 34 different products recalled. The full blow-out list of specific product UPCs, 45-deep, is available here.
“Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
NBCNews reports that a total of 317 people have already gotten sick as a result of the outbreak. If any of your almond butter qualifies, chuck it and call for a refund/replacement. Be careful AB&Jing out there.
