The internet, for all of its uses, is often an encyclopedia of nonstop misinformation, especially when it comes to weight loss and nutrition. Just look at all of the fad diets that come and go and “experts” that constantly contradict each other.
We’re exposing a few of the behemoths. Take this 4 question quiz to help you determine which misleading weight loss statements are fact, or in fact, fiction.
Warning: It’s a toughy. 92% of people who take the quiz fail.
Question #1: What is the biggest source of calories for Americans?
- A) White bread
- B) Beef
- C) Chicken
- D) Sugary soft drinks
Click for the Answer
Answer: D) Sugary soft drinks
Sugary soft drinks supply about 7% of all calories consumed in the U.S. It’s much easier to drink excess calories than it is to eat them. A University of Texas study found that the more soda a person drank—including diet drinks with artificial sweeteners like Diet Coke—the greater risk they had of becoming overweight.1
According to the study, drinking just two cans of soda per day increased waistlines by 500%. Why? Artificial sweeteners disrupt the body’s ability to regulate calorie intake and appetite based on the sweetness of foods.
Question #2: A pound of muscle burns how many calories per day?2
- A) 0.08 calories/day
- B) 3.65 calories/day
- C) 5.67 calories/day
- D) 50 calories/day
Click for the Answer
Answer: C) 5.67 calories per day.
There’s a common myth that every pound of muscle mass burns 50 calories per day. That’s false and greatly exaggerated.
Research suggests that muscle tissue burns off approximately 5.67 calories/lb/day, whereas fat tissue only burns 2 calories/lb/day. If you were to add 17 pounds of muscle to your body, you would burn off an extra 35,000 calories each year. That’s the equivalent of 10 pounds. Are you trying to lose weight (and keep it off) without prioritizing strength training? Bad idea!
Question #3: What country has the highest percentage of obesity in the world?
- A) United States
- B) Mexico
- C) Finland
- D) Luxembourg
Click for the Answer
Answer: B) Mexico
Knocking the U.S out of the top spot is Mexico with an obesity rate of 32.8%.3 Partly contributing to this obesity is rapid urban development and the invasion of fast food restaurants like McDonalds.
The U.S. came in as number two, with an obesity rate of 31.8%. Finland and Luxembourg were both in the top 10.
Question #4: 3,000 people who lost more than 30 pounds and kept it off for more than a year were surveyed. Which of the following was NOT one of the commonly shared behaviors of all participants?
- A) Kept a food journal
- B) Drank green tea daily
- C) Never skipped breakfast
- D) Exercised daily
- E) Ate a balanced diet of fat, carbs, and protein
Click for the Answer
Answer: B) Drank green tea daily
The National Weight Control Registry tracked 3,000 participants and found the following four commonly shared traits: they kept a food journal, never skipped breakfast, exercised daily and ate a balanced diet of fat, carbs and protein.
Drinking green tea daily was NOT one of the commonly shared behaviors of the participants. While green tea and green tea extract can help with fat loss, appetite control, and stress management, it’s by no means mandatory.4
