*First, before I’m crucified, siggi’s is technically Icelandic skyr — NOT Greek yogurt, But for our purposes it’s close enough stylistically to fit in with the upper echelon of the Greek yogurt universe.

If you haven’t noticed, Greek yogurt is just a little bit popular — it grew by a mammoth 2500% across the span of 2006-20111, with sales jumping 50% during 2012 to $1.6B. It now makes up a 35% chunk of the entire yogurt category; up from 1% in 2007.2

The likes of Chobani, FAGE, siggi’s and others have transformed dairy aisles into a technicolor Greek yogurt mosaic; heck, Chobani even has a froyo-style yogurt bar in SoHo.

But popularity aside — pitted head-to-head — which Greek yogurt (*ahem,* and skyr) brand is the sveltest nutritional powerhouse? We face-off.


Chobani Vs. FAGE Vs. Siggi’s

In the 3-man Greek yogurt sandbox there’s no *bad* option; just a hierarchy from lean to abdominal incineration.

To level set, all 3 brands are extremely high quality — they’re made without artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives; free of added growth hormones (rBGH/rBST); kosher, gluten-free, and loaded with live, active probiotic cultures.345

Here’s how they stack up side-by-side for both plain and flavored variants (0%):



The Hierarchy:

1. Plain Greek Yogurt, All Brands — plain Greek yogurt, regardless of brand, is your #1, uncontested champion. It’s got up to 28% fewer calories and roughly 2.5x LESS sugar than its flavored brethren. In the case of FAGE/Chobani, plain also packs an extra 4-5g of muscle-building protein.

2. siggi’s Flavored — a good metric to gauge the “leanness” of yogurt is by the protein-to-sugar ratio. The HIGHER the better, and if it’s over 1 you’re golden — siggi’s is 1.3, FAGE .81, and Chobani rolls in last at .74. It’s also got 10/30 fewer calories than FAGE and Chobani, respectively, and a tad more calcium.

3. FAGE Flavored — while its calorie and protein content are near-identical to siggi’s, the 5g of extra sugar (16g total) is a fat gap that firmly plants it in the #3 spot.

4. Chobani Flavored — although most of the sugar comes from fruit, SOME of it comes courtesy of evaporated cane juice. 19g is a bit much to stomach regularly; FAGE’s 16g is a more palatable bet.

    Fage Greek yogurt all the way - it’s the only legitimate Greek yogurt out of all the ones listed. Personally, I’d even take Oikos over Siggi’s, and Chobani isn’t very healthy - although the taste is, of course, pretty good.

      Siggi’s isn’t greek yoghurt, it’s based off an icelandic strained yoghurt. the proper name for this category is “strained yoghurt” which is what all of these are. You can find strained yoghurts in multiple cultures. I’ve been eating it since I was a kid.

          I’ve also been reading since I was a kid. My response was to your one (prior to me) poster, who erroneously made the point about Greek yoghurts. Which Siggi’s never claimed to be.

          It was also blogger/journalistically lazy to call it “Greek yoghurts” when it’s really a category called “strained yoghurts.” Although it’s probably debatable on if some of these are truly strained, particularly anything made by ConAgra.

      I’m confused by this statement. Did you not see the ingredient list on the Fage strawberry yogurt? It contains corn starch, less than 2% natural flavors, and xanthan gum for consistency. Oikos tastes delicious - because it’s even worse for you than Fage. Fage is pretty darn tame compared to the ingredients in Oikos.

    Any reason you only picked non-fat yogurts? A lot of studies recently have suggested that drinking full-fat milk is better. And non-fat milk has extra stuff added to fix the consistency. So, I’ve been on a quest for a plain, full-fat, not ridiculously sugary yogurt.

      Nope, it was just a baseline to compare the 3 brands. I personally eat plain 2% FAGE or 2% siggi’s.

      But to add to your point, that’s true — there’s a growing body of research that suggests full-fat dairy (milk, butter, cream, etc.) might help reduce obesity, and NOT make us fat like we’ve been taught our entire lives.

      The impact on cholesterol/heart disease/etc is still questionable, but personally, I have no issue with you eating it. Go for it.

    Umm… The chart shows siggis has less calories and sugar than plain greek yogurt.. why is the greek yogurt in 1st?

      Plain siggi’s falls under #1 — Plain Greek Yogurt, All Brands. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. Technically it’s skyr, not Greek yogurt, but I lumped it together for simplicity purposes.

    First off, I am NOT a fan of Greek yogurt. There is an “off” taste to it to me. Which is odd because I eat EVERYTHING (except Greek yogurt…) and love stinky cheeses. But I am just trying Siggis for the first time. I LOVE it. It will be my go-to yogurt from now on. It’s soooo thick and I love that the sugar content is so low. Diabetes runs in my family so I try to limit my sugar intake. Thanks for the comparison!

      Conveniently, it’s also the leanest, so that’s a double win for you! Definitely try the Pumpkin & Spice flavor while it’s still around.

    It seems as though a lot has changed since 2013. I’ve been debating between Fage and Chobani (flavored), and while your chart says that Chobani contains 19 grams of sugar to Fage’s 16 grams, I recently checked a Chobani label and it says 15 grams. Just thought I’d mention that! Thanks for the chart.

      Definitely! The market keeps moving constantly as new flavors and varieties come out.

      Keep in mind that I only sampled one flavor per band (and those haven’t changed). Every flavor has a slightly different nutritional profile, but the same principles hold true — a higher protein-to-sugar ratio is always a good thing.

    I love Siggi’s yogurt. It has the least sugar and they don’t use any antibiotics. Best yogurt ever in my book.

    I’ve only had Chobani and Fage strawberry flavored. FAGE is the better tasting and consistency, by far.
