Blood pressure, which I’ve detailed in-depth in the past, is a metric used to gauge the degree of force applied to arterial walls when the heart pumps blood. When the doctor cuffs your arm with a sphygmomanometer and takes your BP, it outputs a ratio that represents systolic over diastolic.

Systolic blood pressure is the maximum blood pressure, the high end of the range, whenever the heart beats.

Diastolic blood pressure is the minimum blood pressure, the low end of the range, whenever the heart is at rest.

That ratio — typically read around 120/80 mm Hg, which represents “normal” — is the determinant of hypertension (high blood pressure), hypotension (low blood pressure), and ultimately a person’s risk level for heart disease.
