What Does The Average American Eat In a Year? [Infographic]
It’s no secret that Americans eat A LOT, but what exactly are we eating and how much?
The infographic below from Visualeconomics provides a compelling breakdown of what the average American eats on an annual basis, with pound-age figures to boot.
I really want to be shocked that we drink ~ 1 gallon of soda per week, but then again with super-sized drinks and $1 liters abound I’m really, really not.
Some quick hits:
- Average Male: 190 lbs, 5’9″
- Average Female: 164 lbs, 5’4″
- Average caffeine consumption: ~270 mg per day, or about 3 cups of coffee
- Average calories: 2,700 per DAY!
- We eat nearly 2,000 pounds of food per year
- We eat nearly 7x more red meat than fish — reduce that and heart disease would SIGNIFICANTLY drop. Fish adds heart-healthy omega-3s. Cutting red meat consumption reduces saturated fat intake
- We eat .4 pounds of added caloric sweeteners per day — that equates to about 4/5 of ONE CUP. That’s SO much sugar. Fill up a measuring cup if you don’t believe me…

When he’s not working on his (or somebody else’s) abs, whipping up Eggocados, or running a Tough Mudder, he’s probably off yelling at a Carolina Panthers game somewhere.
