Is Frozen Greek Yogurt the Healthiest Dessert Ever?

I’m not sure what’s going on with America-maybe it’s tired of its association with morbid obesity-but frozen yogurt has exploded onto the dessert scene over the last few years. According to IBISWorld, the froyo industy pulled in $1.6 BILLION in 2011 (1). That’s with a B.

Seriously…I can’t walk more than 5 NYC blocks without seeing a Pinkberry, Red Mango, or 16 Handles. Unbelievable. The “evolution,” I suppose, of frozen yogurt might very well be frozen GREEK yogurt. Lately I’ve seen this stuff everywhere, and naturally, being the curious health nut that I am, I decided to indulge.

You heard it hear first-this stuff is PHENOMENAL. Better than iced cream. Plus it’s ACTUALLY HEALTHY!

You know what else is cool? PROTEIN! In dessert form. The two brands I’ve tried-Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Popsicles and Ciao Bella’s Adonia-pack 6g and 9g of protein, respectively.

Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt

One Yasso bar has just 70 calories and 11 grams of sugar, is completely fat free, and packs a whopping 6g of protein. They also boast 15% of the DV for calcium, which bumps up the body’s fat-burning capabilities (2).

Yasso bars have an unbelievably refreshing, light and creamy taste. They kind of taste like edible, fruity, cumulonimbus clouds.

Yasso currently has 3 flavors available-strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry.

Ciao Bella Adonia Frozen Greek Yogurt

Even though Adonia and Yasso Bars are both frozen greek yogurt, they’re on opposite ends of the spectrum. Yasso Bars taste really nice, but they sacrifice that explode-off-your-tongue flavor for unbelievable nutrition.

Adonia greek yogurt (I had the mango)-while still healthy (it packs 9g of protein and 20% of the DV for calcium, but 130 calories and 21 grams of sugar per serving)-is honestly one of the most incredible, refreshing desserts I’ve ever had.

The creaminess of the greek yogurt paired with the subtle sweetness of the mango makes for an out-of-body, greek yogurt dessert experience. It’s perfection in cold, creamy form.

Even if you were to go buckwild and nom nom on the entire tub, you’d only hit a 455 calorie setback. You’d also get 24.5 grams of protein-that’s HALF of your RDV for protein!

Adonia comes in 9 flavors-mango, vanilla, raspberry, blueberry, key lime, peach, espresso, peach bars, and blueberry bars.

Go ahead, enjoy a little innocent pleasure.
