6. Craisins & Dried Fruit
Why it’s fattening:
Don’t get me wrong — fruit is extremely healthy — as it’s LOADED with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Sure it’s primarily sugar, but that sugar is fructose, which digests much more slowly than glucose and any of the stuff that’s found in processed foods.
The problem with most packaged dried fruit, in particularly Ocean Spray Craisins, is twofold:
- Manufacturers add even MORE sugar to a perfectly sweet, healthy product. I really don’t get it.
- When fruit is dehydrated it removes almost all of the water and a lot of the nutrients, both of which help keep hunger levels under control and minimize fat storage. Dried fruit is EXTREMELY concentrated, which amps up the calories and sugar content.
Here’s a quick comparison for you:
Craisins: 1/3 of a cup has 130 calories and 26 grams of sugar
Cranberries: 1 cup has 46 calories and 4 grams of sugar.
