9 Faux “Health Foods” That’ll Blow Up Your Belly
5. California Rolls
Why it’s fattening:
In general, sushi and fish are extremely healthy.
That’s where the problem lies — unless you’re at a super high-end sushi place, California rolls don’t actually contain real fish. Imitation crab (aka surimi) contains minimal amounts of crab with a bunch of sugar, corn starch, egg whites, and preservatives/flavorings added for taste.
In addition to being faux sushi, California rolls are essentially carbohydrate bombs. There’s a little bit of avocado and fake crab, but overall they’re about 75% white rice. White rice is extremely quick digesting (it’s really high on the glycemic index), which triggers an insulin spike and turbo charges fat storage.
Smart swaps:
- Chirashi
- Sushi with brown rice
- Non-spicy rolls
- Sashimi
- Nagiri
You’re better off with anything else in the sushi restaurant. My person favorite is Chirashi, which is assorted sashimi over brown rice (you have to ask). It’s unbelievably high in protein, fresh and delicious, and the brown rice is much less prone to fat storage than the white variety.
